I agreed, thinking I would be given time to do this, but this wasn’t the case and I was expected to perform my usual duties as well. The company doesn’t have a formal induction process and non-managerial staff like myself are expected to teach and train the new starters their day-to-day job. I have never been trained in instruction. I’ve always wanted to do a coaching and mentoring course as it sounds as if it would equip me with the skills I need. I didn’t feel very professional doing it this way. The new starters were starting at our busiest time of year. I enjoyed training the new staff member, it wasn’t difficult but my day-to-day work started to suffer as I was spending the majority of my time away from my desk. I informed my line manager of the situation and was told that it had been decided that everyone would be involved in the training of a new member of staff. Although this was helping me with my workload I didn’t feel it was the best way to train new staff by them being passed around the office
