1. What impacts can you identify from these pictures, both visible and invisible? Lesotho is one of the poorest countries and has difficult access due to its mountainous location. The Sani Pass is located at the border to South Africa and is only accessible by 4x4s. In 1955, the first tour operator was established and many companies have followed to take tourists, mainly day trippers, from Underberg in KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) up the Sani Pass across the border to Sani Top Chalet, the highest pub in Africa, which offers meals and basic accommodation for travellers. There is a small community living in traditional huts which earns most of its money from herding animals and some agriculture, but this has now become part of the tourism system by offering insights into its communal life (such as bread making, see picture). The people receive small change from the tour operators and tips from the tourists. One of these visits can provide them with enough money for a week’s living expenses.
