Question:

3. Analyse the similarities and differences between designing a servicescape for a railway station and for an airport. These three major London terminals are among the UK’s busiest stations and are located less than a mile from each other on the northern edges of the city.

London Euston receives passenger services from across the UK, from as far away as Glasgow and Edinburgh via the high speed West Coast Mainline, which is serviced by tilting Pendolino trains operated by Virgin. A number of more local services also terminate at Euston, as do the Scottish Sleeper trains.

Kings Cross receives services from the north-east and east of England and also from Edinburgh (Scotland).

London St Pancras is the terminus for Eurostar services to Europe (via the Channel Tunnel), high speed services to the south-east and Midland Main Line services from Yorkshire and the East Midlands. Underneath the station there are also Thameslink platforms for local services into and through London from the north to the south.

All three stations are connected to the Underground (St Pancras and Kings Cross are interconnected) and have access for connecting bus and taxi services and car parking. The Euston bus station adjoins Euston station.

These three stations provide an interesting contrast in their servicescapes, as illustrated in the photos below – St Pancras (top left and right), Euston (bottom left) and Kings Cross

(bottom right).
