Businesses get very skilled at managing the things they can measure and track. We have elaborate, sophisticated systems to track financial costs and earnings. It might also be argued that we need equally sophisticated systems to track indicators of human well-being and the health of ecosystems.4 What kinds of things would we measure if we were trying to maximize the wellbeing of workers and customers? What items would appear on a balance sheet of gains and losses of natural capital?
