Question:

EXERCISE 2.12. Consider a vessel held at constant temperature T and pressure P, separated into two disjoint compartments, I and II, by a membrane. In each compartment there is a well-stirred, dilute solution of a solute and a solvent. Assume that the membrane is permeable to the solute, but not permeable to the solvent. Compute the ratios of the concentrations of solute in the two compartments for the following two cases.

(a) The solute is uncharged, but the solvents in the two compartments are different.

(b) The solute is charged and the fluids in the two compartments are maintained at different electric potentials, but the solvents are the same.
