The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices (e.g., “smart homes”) with the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or humanto- computer interaction. IoT devices are vulnerable to malicious attacks by network robots (botnets). In a paper published in Computers & Security (December 2019), researchers showed that the inter-arrival times (in seconds) of malicious data packets sent by botnets to a vulnerable IoT system follow an exponential distribution with a mean of 1 second. Is it likely that the inter-arrival time of a malicious data packet will exceed 5 seconds? Explain.
