It is an unfortunate fact of life that the characteristics that one is born with play a critical role in later life. For example, race is a critical factor in almost all aspects of North American life. Height and weight also determine how friends, teachers, employers, and customers will treat you. And now we may add physical attractiveness to this list. A recent study followed the careers of students from a prestigious U.S. law school. A panel of independent raters examined the graduation yearbook photos of the students and rated their appearance as unattractive, neither attractive nor unattractive, or attractive. The annual incomes in thousands of dollars 5 years after graduation were recorded. Assuming that incomes are not normally distributed, can we infer that incomes of lawyers are affected by physical attractiveness?
