Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett wrote a book called The Spirit Level: Why Greater Equality Makes Societies Stronger. In it, they examine the consequences for societies of increasing inequality. They report that the correlation coefficient for the relationship between countries’ income inequality and their scores on a child well-being index is −0.62 and the correlation coefficient between income inequality and homicides is 0.47.
