Rank the following 20 items in order of their importance to you. In the left-hand column, place the number 1 next to the most important item, the number 2 next to the second most important item, and so on through to the least important item (number 20).

Note: If this skills application is used as an in-class exercise, to save time we suggest that you use the following scale rather than the rank order: Select the four items that are most important to you and place the number one (1) in the blanks to the left of those items. Select the four items that are least important to you and place the number three

(3) in the blanks. From the remaining items, place the number two (2) in the blanks. After everyone has had time to complete the task, I ask for two student volunteers to be my counters. Using a simple show of hands, we tabulate the results, for example, “Everyone who has freedom to do my job in their top four raise their hands.” The results may surprise you. P-687
