An item is produced on a particular machine. The setup time to change over production from some other item to this one is quite large. The machine is run for a single 10-hour shift each day. Changeovers can be done, if desired, in the off-shift time. When a production run of the item is initiated, an obvious decision is how much to produce. How is this decision similar to the one of ordering an item from the supplier where the supplier only sells the item in a rather large pack-size (or container)?
