The Campus Committee on Sustainability (CCS) of your university or college has sent out a Request for Proposal for a report of about 12–15 pages to improve the university’s eco-friendliness by reducing energy use, curbing carbon emissions, or just generally any project that would make the campus more eco-friendly.

In teams of two, three, or four, your mission is to come up with a proposal idea, research the topic to determine if it is feasible or not (it’s acceptable to conclude that the project you propose is not feasible), and then write the proposal. If further research is required to ensure feasibility, then you should include that information as well.

Note that, for the purposes of this assignment, your topic may be imaginary

(e.g., building a dome over the campus). However, you should write the report as if the proposal is feasible, making up whatever details you need to make your proposal seem realistic.

Your proposal should follow the structure for this type of report as explained in the section on Formal Proposals above (you’ll find additional information on informal proposals in Chapter 17). You should also create an imaginary survey (that is, you don’t have to do actual interviews, although you can if you wish) of not more than 5–10 questions to see whether there is a market or audience for your idea.

For example, in the sample formal proposal report in Chapter 19, the report authors have proposed a bike-sharing plan for their campus. As part of their formal proposal, the authors have created an (imaginary) survey of students to determine whether there is a demand for bike-sharing. You should use charts from this survey in the body of your report. The survey questions should be in Appendix A, the data (in table format) in Appendix B, as with the analytical report.
