John Hughes’s careful look at teenage culture in a suburban Chicago high school focuses on a group of teenagers from the school’s different subcultures. They start their Saturday detention with nothing in common, but over the course of a day, they learn each other’s innermost secrets. This sequence shows the detainees at lunchtime. It is an edited version of the “Lunchtime” sequence that appears in the first third of the film. Carefully study each character’s behavior to answer the following questions. The rest of the film shows the growing relationships among the five detainees as they try to understand each other.
