The pre-sinking stress field assumed to be caused by gravity alone (Problem 3.37) turns out to be wrong. The actual stress field has a tectonic component that adds a constant 8.62 MPa to the east–west horizontal stress attributable to gravity and twice that amount to the north–south stress attributable to gravity. Orient the shaft in the optimum direction and then determine the unlined shaft wall safety factors.
