As an organic chemistry teaching assistant, I would first go over the general concepts that applied to the problem at hand. Next, I asked the students to attempt the problem while thinking about the concept I went over with them. In practice, the tutees responses were sometimes surprising and I was able to correct their understanding of certain topics more effectively.
