In 1990 the average and median prices of a new single-family home were approximately $95,200 and $118,200, respectively. Ten years later, these prices had risen to $139,000 and $177,000. During the same time period the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose from 2,633 to 10,646 and the S&P 500 stock index rose from 330 to 1,320.
