Question:
Internet search engines often return large lists of results for the search lists that are entered. Some guides suggest refining the search by adding more words to the search list. To test whether this suggestion is effective, the accompanying table shows the numbers of results returned by Yahoo Canada for each of eight randomly generated, two-word search lists. The bottom row shows the numbers of results returned when each two-word search list is supplemented by a randomly generated third word. Use the sign test to test the claim that there is no difference in the numbers of results returned before and after adding the additional word to the search list. Is simply adding more words to a search list an effective strategy to reduce the numbers of results?
Use a 0.05 significance level with the indicated test. If no particular test is specified, use the appropriate nonparametric test from this chapter.
