Question:

GarcS~ao and Cabrita (A-13) wanted to evaluate the community pharmacist’s capacity to positively influence the results of antihypertensive drug therapy through a pharmaceutical care program in Portugal. Eighty-two subjects with essential hypertension were randomly assigned to an intervention or a control group. The intervention group received monthly monitoring by a research pharmacist to monitor blood pressure, assess adherence to treatment, prevent, detect, and resolve drug-related problems, and encourage nonpharmacologic measures for blood pressure control. The changes after 6 months in diastolic blood pressure (pre post, mm Hg) are given in the following table for patients in each of the two groups.
