One of the purposes of a study by Liu et al. (A-17) was to determine the effects of MRZ 2/579 on neurological deficit in Sprague-Dawley rats. In this study, 10 rats were measured at four time periods following occlusion of the middle carotid artery and subsequent treatment with the uncompetitive Nmethly-D-aspartate antagonist MRZ 2/579, which previous studies had suggested provides neuroprotective activity. The outcome variable was a neurological function variable measured on a scale of 0–12. A higher number indicates a higher degree of neurological impairment.
