In about 500 words prepare a press release for a large firm, locally situated, which is having difficulty in attracting good-quality schoolleavers as trainees in administrative and technical jobs. The firm already advertises vacancies through the usual media but hopes for wider publicity in the local press in order to improve recruitment.

ADVERTISING Writing advertising copy is a highly skilled business about which many books have been written. In their examinations students may be asked to write relatively straightforward advertising copy, for example for classified advertisements, for job advertisements, for appeals for funds for charity, or for 'sales' advertisements.
Advertisements ('adverts') in the press are often divided into two kindsclassified and display.
Classified advertisements appear under main headings which group together the type of product or service for sale or wanted, such as the following example:
BEAUTIFUL UPRIGHT PIANO; perfect working order; £170; Tel. 01 380 6040 The information in these advertisements is run on from line to line, often all in the same type face, with no special layout.
Display adverts, on the other hand, will have a variety of type faces and sizes (see Figure 22) and will frequently be illustrated. In magazines, and sometimes in newspapers, use is made of colour.

The Lawn Tennis Association have confirmed that the tournament, the most valuable in Britain after Wimbledon, will take place from June 16th to 21st. The event will be the only one in Britain to be graded an AA men's competition in the Commercial Union Grand Prix series. The singles winner collects 9000, the runner-up 4500 and the losing semi- finalists 2250 each. The winning doubles. pair share $2400. With the Wimbledon fortnight to follow, the world's top men will be playing for three weeks in front of British spectators. Torquay made tennis history last year by making a five-year agreement with the Association of Tennis Professionals to stage a najor tournament annually. ATP agreed not to support any other top-flight competition anywhere in the world during the same week as the Torquay event.
