Given the current environment, how do you define the issue facing companies today? As we know, defining the issue is vital in ethical decision making and the question is important. Is our dilemma a question of what policy to implement, how to mold a culture, what guidance to offer workers? Or is it a deeper issue involving changing mind-sets? Some might argue that it is not an employer’s place to engage in the latter effort, nor even possible. If Harvey Weinstein had gone to a sexual harassment training, would he have acted any differently?The #MeToo movement was inspired and established by Tarana Burke in 2006 as a means to assist underrepresented women of color affected by sexual abuse, and the term went viral when tweeted by actress Alyssa Milano in October 2017 as a rallying cry for all women who have been sexually assaulted. The tweet was sent at the same time that allegations of rape and other forms of sexual assault were leveled against media mogul Harvey Weinstein. Those public allegations and the viral tweets opened the floodgates to claims by other women (and some men) of their own experiences of rape, sexual assault, and other forms of sexual-based misconduct, millions communicating using the hashtag #MeToo. These communications resulted in payouts well into the millions of dollars and a New York Times report that approximately two hundred prominent men had lost their positions after allegations had been filed against them.
