There were calls by many in the United States as well as by Enes Freedom for the United States to boycott the 2022 Winter Olympics in China. The United States decided to have only a diplomatic boycott. In 1936, the United States did not boycott the Olympics in Germany.

However, the United States was not permitted to send any of its Jewish athletes, and Jessie Owens, who had won several gold medals in track and field events, was not permitted to receive those medals because of Hitler’s racist views. In 1980, the United States did boycott the Olympics when they were held in the USSR

(Russia/Soviet Union) because of that country’s invasion of Afghanistan. Sixty-five countries joined the United States in the boycott.79 The Soviet Union won the most medals, but there was little coverage of the games in the United States.
