Vince Cuseo, an admissions official at Occidental College, got a call from Rick Singer in 2012. Mr. Singer asked that Mr. Cuseo reconsider the denied application of an academically challenged daughter of a wealthy family. Mr. Singer suggested that the parents could give money to Occidental above and beyond the cost of tuition. Mr. Cuseo refused her admission. Mr. Singer said, “Are you kidding? We can create a win–win for both of us.”226 Mr. Cuseo explained that Occidental made a decision in the 1980s to not

“chase wealthy students” and instead focus on poorer minority students.227 He said that a development officer suggested he take a look at the application of a child of a very wealthy family. However, she did not meet Occidental standards and was denied admission.
