The shape is an example of a compound shape as, although it is a pentagon, it can be split into a rectangle A and a triangle B as shown.
Area of rectangle A: 3 × 8 = 24 cm2
Area of triangle B: The ‘height’ of the triangle can be deduced as it is the difference between the 12 cm and 8 cm measurements, i.e. 4 cm
The area is therefore 1/2 × 3 × 4 = 6 cm2
Total area of compound shape is 24 + 6 = 30 cm2
