Sheets of graphene one atom thick were first prepared in the laboratory of Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselov at the University of Manchester. The scientists picked up flecks of graphite with adhesive tape and then pulled the layers apart with another piece of tape until one layer remained. Suppose you repeated this process with a piece of tape 2.0 cm wide until one layer remained that completely covered 1.0 cm of the tape.
