You have a blind spot where your optic nerve exits your retina. Because of the presence of the optic nerve, there are no rods or cones in this spot. Why is there no obvious blind spot in your field of vision? The brain cleverly fills in this area using visual information from surrounding areas. Let’s locate your blind spot. Draw a small dot on the left side of a piece of paper and a small x on the right side. The x should be about 6 inches from the dot. Now hold the paper in front of you at arm’s length. Close your right eye and look at the x with your left eye. Slowly bring the sheet of paper closer to your face. At some point, the dot will disappear. Why?
