When applying for a job, whether emailing your résumé directly to a company or through an online job board like Monster, you should always include a cover letter. A well prepared cover letter should convince the prospective employer to read your résumé and to contact you for an interview. The letter should describe the job you want at that company and your qualifications for the specific job. It should also let the firm know how you prefer to be reached to set up an appointment for an interview.

1. Prepare a cover letter to use with a résumé you have prepared. If you have not yet created a résumé, do so now for your dream job.

2. After having several friends review your letter, edit it carefully.
