Question:

Professional and Ethical Behaviour}

You have recently been recruited for a summer intern position at Orangeberry Ltd. (OBL). OBL is a private company that specializes in selling home electronics for personal use. OBL also has a division that focuses on providing installation and repair services. OBL has been in business for six years and has expanded quickly to keep up with demand.

You were hired by Mathew, the head HR recruiter. You're excited to get this summer position, as it will provide you with much-needed work experience.
You work in the accounting department and report directly to Rosanne, who has been with the company since day one and is responsible for all accounting-related functions.
You overhear Rosanne telling Joe in accounting that she doesn't understand why cash flow is down when net income per the statement of earnings is positive. She says she could understand that this would happen if the company were showing a loss, but the net income is positive and has been for the last two years. Yet it seems as if OBL is struggling to pay its bills.
You recall from your accounting course in university that your professor always said, "Don't forget about the statement of cash flow, as it's one of the most important statements you can look at." You quickly go into Rosanne's office to tell her that you overheard her discussion with Joe and heard her concern about the business relating to cash flows. You ask if you can see the financial statements to help out with her issue. Rosanne has a smile on her face, thinking it unlikely that the summer intern would be able to solve the problem, but she thinks that this could be a good learning opportunity for you and provides you with the statement of financial position and statement of earnings for your review.
You ask her where the statement of cash flow is. She quickly replies, "We are a private company and therefore do not need one. The tax authorities don't really care about the statement of cash flow, so we never bothered to prepare one."
