Turn to page 421 and browse the article on “Leadership: current theories, research, and future directions”. This is not easy reading but it will help develop skills that will be useful throughout the remainder of your course and, maybe, the rest of your life. First, do not dwell on details. Look at the section headings and sample the odd paragraph, here and there. Next, choose a section (about a page long) that interests you most and read it carefully. You may need to read it several times, perhaps separated by a day or more. The style is abstract and very difficult for a newcomer to assimilate. Nevertheless, persevere. No pain, no gain! The skills you are learning will be of immense benefit when completing future assignments. Despite the difficult style, try to relate your chosen section to what you have heard in your lectures and what you have read in this or other books. Think how you could use this information and references in future assignments. Write down the names of three or four researchers whose publications are quoted. Look at other chapters and note those which may be relevant to your studies of management (hint: pages 451 and 475

– and there are at least two other chapters relevant to management). Annual Reviews of Psychology are the gold standard of concise, up-to-date information.

Topics are renewed on a cycle of about three years. Annual Reviews of Psychology should be one of your top resources when researching an essay, assignment or work project. Remember that! There are annual reviews in other subjects relevant to management (e.g.

sociology). Locate at least three of them.
