Each of 13 hearing-impaired subjects, all fitted with a cochlear implant, participated in a structured communication interaction with a familiar conversational partner (a family member) and with an unfamiliar conversational partner (who was instructed not to take the initiative to repair breakdowns in communication). The total number of words used by the subject in each of the two conversations is given in the accompanying table and saved in the HEARAID file.
