In one of their experiments, they set up a situation in which the participant is brought into the waiting room either by himself or herself or with two or four confederates. The researcher says she will be right back, but as she walks into the other room, she pretends to sprain her ankle. The number of seconds from her cry until the participant offers help is recorded as the dependent variable. The following data are representative of their findings:
