In 2000 the U.S. Department of Justice released a study of the death penalty from 1995 to

2000, a period during which U.S. Attorneys were required to submit to the Justice Department

for review and approval all cases in which they sought the death sentence. (The report

can be found at http://www.usdoj.gov/dag/pubdoc/_dp_survey_final.pdf.) The data were broken

down by whether the U.S. attorney recommended seeking the death penalty and by the

race of the victim (not the defendant). These data are summarized below.
