Keep a reflexivity journal for a project that you want to do and/ or are starting. Begin the journal by answering the following questions:

• How do your characteristics matter in your research? (For instance, consider gender, sexuality, race, class, patience, and ability to handle ambiguity.)

• How do your characteristics and topic matter interact? (For instance, what if you are doing research on sexual harassment and identify as feminist?)

• How do your answers to the questions above influence you as an interviewer? (For instance, being a feminist interviewing sexual harassers may mean that it is difficult to “bracket” feelings of hostility toward an participant.)

In this journal, you will want to answer these questions again after interactions with participants.

You will want to write in the journal during fieldwork activities. You will also want to write about your impressions of participants and research participants, your own feelings about your research, and emerging ideas about your research, yourself as a researcher, and your feelings about the research process. The idea of the journal is for you to document your evolving sense of reflexivity as it relates to you as a researcher, your research, and how reflexivity is included and excluded in the research process. If you are a student, you can answer the following questions after every class reading and activity:

• What was the most difficult part of this reading/ exercise?

• What did I learn about myself as a researcher after this reading/ exercise?

• What did I learn about research after this reading/ exercise?
