Housing Works is a New York non-profit company. It started in the early 1990s to find housing for people who were homeless and had HIV. It now also runs over a dozen Housing Works thrift shops, while offering expanded services to the homeless. Given Housing Work’s progressive mission, the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union expected to find a welcoming environment when it came to organize. Instead, the company hired a labor lawyer to help it resist the union. And, it refused to remain neutral with respect to resisting the union’s efforts. For its part, Housing Work’s CEO says his employees already earn more than employees in comparable organizations. He also says he maintains an open door policy that enables workers to easily access management with suggestions and grievances. How would you explain that such a progressive company would resist unionization? What argument would you make for it to be more welcoming of the union?
