Target Corporation (2014) / Retail Cyberattack Description Verizon, the major telecommunications provider, suffered a data security breach with over 6 million U.S. customers' personal details exposed on the Internet.ª Considered by many the largest data breach discovered in the history of the Internet. Breach took place in late 2014, where hackers stole information associated with at least 500 million Yahoo! user accounts, including names, e-mail addresses, telephone numbers, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers, dates of births, and encrypted password. Yahoo! publicly disclosed the data breach 2 years later on September 22, 2016.b Servers storing credit assessment information (e.g., names, addresses, social security numbers, etc.) of more than 15 million customers were attacked by hackers. Up to 200,000 users were either at risk of a cyberattack or have already had personal information compromised reported the cross-platform messaging application. Through internet connection, WhatsApp provides texting services, replacing the regular SMS text messages.b Considered the largest healthcare breach to date, the cyberattack on Anthem affected up to 80 million current and former customers. Anthem, Inc.'s president and CEO Joseph Swedish stated that "Anthem was the target of a very sophisticated external cyberattack."d Hackers gained access to Anthem's computer system and got information including names, birthdates, medical IDs, Social Security numbers, street addresses, e-mail addresses, and employment information, including income data. Cyberattacks on point-of-sale systems during 10 months at numerous Chick-Fil-A restaurants resulted in around 9,000 credit cards being compromised.b Malware (software that damages or disables computer systems) was detected in the point-of-sale systems of 115 stores, affecting around 1.16 million credit cards.b Cyberattack Description A cyberattack on Sony Pictures Entertainment's computer networks stole significant amounts of private and of confidential data and also released them to the public. Hackers were believed to be linked to the North Korean government, which was extremely angry at the major Hollywood movie studio for producing a movie (i.e., The Interview) that portrayed North Korea in and negative way, and depicted the assassination of their leader.e Cyberattack during the 2013 Christmas holiday season compromised Target's computer systems and stole data from up to 40 million customers' credit and debit cards. Considered the second-largest breach reported by a U.S. retailer.
