Volunteer to work in a homeless shelter or soup kitchen, hopefully more than once.

Before you go, look up the “culture of poverty” on the Internet—don’t forget also to look up criticisms of the idea that there is a culture of poverty. Serve, but also observe people around you. Talk to them if you can, and get to know them. How are they similar, but also different from one another? Does simply being poor give one certain cultural characteristics, or vice versa?
