Refer to Exercise 7.2.12 where a student wanted to investigate whether or not people tend to marry

Question:

Refer to Exercise 7.2.12 where a student wanted to investigate whether or not people tend to marry spouses of similar ages and so gathered age data from a sample of 24 couples taken from marriage licenses filed in Cumberland County, PA, in June and July 1993.

a. Define, in words, the appropriate parameter(s) of interest in the context of the study. Also, state the appropriate symbol(s) to denote the parameter(s).
b. State, in words, the appropriate null and alternative hypotheses in the context of the study.
c. State, using the symbol(s) described in part (a), the appropriate null and alternative hypotheses in the context of the study.
d. Check whether the validity conditions for the theory-based test are satisfied here.
e. Use appropriate technology (such as the Matched Pairs or Theory-Based Inference applet, or a statistical soft - ware package) to conduct the theory-based test of significance to find and report the test statistic and p-value.

f. Interpret the p-value from part (e) in the context of the study and then draw a conclusion about statistical significance.
g. Find and interpret the 95% confidence interval for the parameter(s) of interest in the context of the study.
h. State your conclusion in the context of the study, being sure to comment on statistical significance, estimation, causation, and generalization.

Data from previous exercise

To investigate whether or not people tend to marry spouses of similar ages or whether husbands tend to be older than their wives, a student gathered age data from a sample of 24 couples, taken from marriage licenses fi led in Cumberland County, PA, in June and July 1993. The data file MarriageAges contains the data.
