Healthcare leaders such as Jack Bovender, retired CEO of the Nashville-based Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), demonstrated his understanding of diversity when he launched HCA's chief operating officer (COO) development program, which paired new administrator recruits with mentors and allowed them corporate-level experience so they were prepared and ready to be future COOs (Rubenfire 2015). Moreover, he demonstrated his understanding of the importance of diversity by ensuring that the program focus on hiring more women and other minorities. He even took on the title of chief diversity officer to underscore its importance (Rubenfire 2015). Why do you think it was effective for Bovender to identify himself as the “chief diversity officer?” What professionalism components would you be mastering if you were to participate in such a program?
