People aged 50 to 71 were initially contacted in the mid-1990s to participate in a study about smoking and bladder cancer. Data were collected from more than 280,000 men and 186,000 women from eight states who answered questions about their health, smoking history, alcohol intake, diet, physical activity, and other lifestyle factors. When the study ended in 2006, about half the bladder cancer cases in adults age 50 and older were traceable to smoking. (Journal of the American Medical Association, August 17, 2011)
