3.17 Japanese Automakers in 2005 In 2005, total global production of motor vehicles was about 64 million units. The U.S. was the single largest producer with a 21% share of global output. Japan was second with 18% and Canada was the eighth largest producer with a 4% share. The Japanese overseas production by Japanese automakers steadily increased for a decade. The following table provides the production numbers at North American plants.
