Question:

3.1 What could the noise factors be in these cases?

(a) You are about to design a screw cap to a bottle. You want it to be easy to open and have chosen to look at the opening energy as the response. What could the noise factors be? (Make some assumptions about what you can affect and what part of the cap design you work with.)

(b) Two pieces of wood are glued together in a furniture factory.

(c) The strip position of Example 2.1 in addition to the temperature that has already been considered in the example.

(d) A finite element simulation method for the maximum stress of a bracket

(before making the bracket robust we want the simulation method to be robust, so this is the task).

(e) Self learning software. Some vehicles have a rain sensor. It is a little device that can be mounted close to the rearview mirror in the centre of the car.
It sends out a signal and measures how this signal is reflected back to the sensor. The software interprets a sudden change of the reflection as a presence of rain-drops on the windshield and the wipers start. Since the windshield not will look exactly the same when it is aged as when it is new (there will, for example, be scratches), the software must be self learning so that it ‘knows’ what a normal state is. A team of engineers wants to develop robust software for this, but what should the software be robust against?

(f) Something from your own field of work.
