The concept of entropy was developed in the nineteenth century, in order to study the efficiency of the steam engine, largely through the work of Sadi Carnot, Rudolph Clausius, and Lord Kelvin. However, it has had major implications well beyond the realm of engineering, including impacting the thought, philosophy, and theology of nineteenth-century Europe.
