Question:
1. Why is it important for a personnel director to be bilingual?
2. How is training and development affected by a staff that speaks several languages?
This event will assess interpretation of personnel policies and knowledge of human resource management. You are the human resources director for a large hotel. You hire employees for all departments. Many individuals who apply for housekeeping positions are Mexican citizens who legally live in the United States and speak only Spanish. You do not speak Spanish. Labor unions are pressuring you not to hire the less expensive nonunion Mexican labor; however, you do not want to be guilty of discrimination. You are challenged to develop a human resources policy manual that states how employees are selected.
You also must prepare a presentation that will appease the labor union and Mexican citizens applying for positions at your hotel. Address the following issues: minimum wages, legal citizenship, and policies against discrimination.
