79. Betty Omen is considering buying passage on the first voyage of the Titanic. She is at a cocktail party and sees Captain Smith, who is going to command the voyage. Betty walks over and asks the Captain, “Is the Titanic safe?” He responds, “Madame, the Titanic is capable of surviving any impact whatsoever — missiles, nuclear weapons, icebergs, you name it.” In fact, Smith doesn’t know if this is true; he hasn’t seen the ship itself or any technical specifications.
