Question:
Adam Goodes is a proud Indigenous man and recognised leader. He is also part of the Stolen Generations. His life and work extend beyond his recognition as an Australian Football League (AFL) player for the Sydney Swans (2000–2015). Adam also co-founded the GO Foundation in 2011, which runs various programs for the local Indigenous population and now focuses on Indigenous education with scholarships available through 26 mostly public schools, as well as five universities. It is Adam’s leadership roles as part of the GO Foundation and on the field as a champion footballer that are of note. His response to the booing saga was legendary. While deeply hurt by being sledged as ‘an ape’ by a 13-year-old girl in the raucous crowd while he played football, he noted that she should not be blamed; the environment that she grew up in had shaped her actions. The events that followed the booing saga were stressful; however, both the AFL Players’ Association and captains showed solidarity with Goodes. In May 2015, Goodes celebrated a goal by performing an Aboriginal war dance, including a simulated spear throw. This also created controversy with some seeing it as inflammatory and others as celebratory. Surprised by the reaction, Goodes later apologised for any offence, recognising that it was seen as a ‘war cry’ directed at other players. Goodes continues to lead Indigenous thought and perspectives today through the GO Foundation, his contributions to Anita Heiss’ 2018 biographical anthology Growing Up Aboriginal In Australia, and his work advising on matters related to Indigenous reconciliation.
