What action should the company take?

The Really Big Hotels company has grown quickly in the last few years. Today, it operates thirty hotels along the Arizona—Southern California corridor. Because of competition for employees with other industries, the company has instituted a policy (in accordance with federal regulations) of taking employment documents at face value. If an applicant has a Social Security number, for instance, the company now has a policy of accepting it regardless of whether the manager believes that the number belongs to the applicant. The result is that the company has begun hiring many illegal aliens to work in its hotels. Problems have arisen from this. For example, recently the company received a letter from a woman in Seattle, Washington, who claims that the Social Security number used by one of the company’s employees is really hers, that the employee or others stole the number to allow for employment.
