Using insider experience as a social worker and as an African parent, Williams (2013) has written a book for African parents living in the UK. She was dismayed by witnessing frequent misunderstandings and negative interactions between African families and child welfare agencies. Accessibly written, her book outlines UK law on child protection and welfare, discusses how child abuse, including issues of faith and demonic possession and female genital mutilation, is understood in the UK and explains the roles of welfare professionals. It recognises that systemic pressures of racism, poverty, poor housing and insecure immigration status affect many African parents and signposts useful resources. She uses this book in community outreach.
