Sydney Malkin, an architect in a small town in Saskatchewan, was asked to bid on a major

Question:

Sydney Malkin, an architect in a small town in Saskatchewan, was asked to bid on a major project to build a new arena for the city. While he had never been involved in such a project, he had played hockey in the junior leagues and felt that he could design a beautiful arena. In addition to being a skilled architect, he was a close friend of Freddie Sacic, the chief administrative officer of the city. They played hockey together, lived close to each other, and had kids on the same hockey team.
From a professional point of view, this project could position Sydney and his growing firm as a potential leader in the region for other similar projects. Success in winning the job would have major financial and professional benefits for Sydney.
Sydney knew that Freddie, a professional accountant, would be involved in reviewing the submissions for the new arena and could significantly influence the final decision. Over a period of several months, whenever he had a chance Sydney would speak to Freddie, on an unofficial basis, about the project. Freddie always encouraged him to prepare the best possible bid and to ensure that his cost estimates were as accurate as possible.
Sydney was becoming frustrated because, as much as he talked to Freddie, he could not get any specific guidance on how to formulate his bid. Finally, as the bid deadline got very close, Sydney visited Freddie at home and began to talk about the bid for the new arena. Sydney told Freddie that winning the job would put him in a very good position, both financially and professionally. He told Freddie that, if he was successful, he would make sure that Freddie and his wife could join Sydney and his wife on a holiday to Hawaii at Sydney's expense. They had holidayed together
on one other occasion and no one needed to know that Sydney would pay all the expenses of the holiday for both couples.
