Ask members of the class to divide into pairs. Have the two students stare at each other
Question:
Ask members of the class to divide into pairs. Have the two students stare at each other for 1 full minute. After the time has elapsed have the students turn their backs to each other and change five things about their appearance (e.g., untuck shirt, take off belt, stick a pen behind ear, etc.). When the students turn back around have them note the five changes in the partner’s appearance as quickly as possible. Next, have them turn around again and change 10 things about their appearance. Repeat the recall exercise. If possible, do one more round of changes (or stop if the class becomes agitated). Discuss how quickly we dismiss the differences in people; additionally, note people’s resistance to change and accept/notice the differences in appearance. This can accentuate any discussion of diversity/less noticeable differences between individuals.
