I am currently studying towards my Master of Chemistry after graduating a Cum Laude for my Chemistry Honours and another Cum Laude for my BSc Chemistry and Biochemistry
I tutored mostly high school students privately after school and during the summer. We met in their homes, the public library or at school. I charged no hourly fee and provided any necessary materials. It was my passion, my hobby providing extra help to rural-based learners.
Having taught Advanced level Mathematics, Biology, and Chemistry in two local countryside schools for up to two years meant that I had contact with a lot of students that needed special attention. I never had to advertise — word of mouth and referral from peers was how most students knew of me. At one point I did have a reach out call for students that struggled in re-writing their failed subjects at both O and A’ level. I stayed very busy, especially in the summers, and always had a full schedule regardless of that I was fully employed as a temporary teacher. I typically met with each student in order to get an idea of what the focus of my instruction/remediation should be. Becoming familiar with the student's learning style(s) was also very helpful.
Often students would share records and test results with me. After a few tutoring sessions, I documented the student’s progress and gave them written updates, as well as phone calls or emails as needed.
While my students and I certainly utilized no technology or the internet by then during our sessions, I never tutored online or for any tutoring company, but mainly offline.
At university, I continued on remunerated appointment from the Chemistry Department with tutoring first years. For now, outside my scheduled hours I freely help up to Honours students since I have enough time during my MSc study. Tutoring one on one I feel enjoyable and rewarding. My students and I always have fun and grow quite fond of one another. The extra income is always a bonus. I look forward to becoming an academic in the near future and a full-time researcher.
