Once the copyright runs out on a book or musical composition, the work can legally be posted on the Internet for anyone to download. U.S. copyright law protects the monopoly for 95 years after the original publication. But in Australia and Europe, the copyright holds for only 50 years. Thus, an Australian website can post Gone With the Wind, a 1936 novel, or Elvis Presley's 1954 single “That's All Right," while a U.S. site cannot. Obviously, this legal nicety won't stop American fans from downloading from Australian or European sites.
